Northeast Practicum

Today was our first meeting for our
"I Am" poems. My two students, Holly and Alyssa were very excited. We talked about what an "I Am" poem is
about. I read them my poem and they were ready to go. First, we brain stormed some words they could work with.
Shortly after that they were finished. I guess when you are eager to write the work comes easy because these two girls
were on a roll! I now Share with you their "I Am" poems:
I Am From...
by Alyssa Chavez
I am from sports,
like softball and soccer.
I am from playdough, Bratz,
popcorn and chores.
I am from celebrating, playing house,
and a family of five.
I am from going outside, swimming,
climbing and jumping on the trampoline.
I am from going to school, going
to church together
and living on 31st street.
I am from working together, playing
together,
having fun together - I am from Farmington.
My "I Am From" Poem
By Holly Woodside
I am from T.V., video games, to telephones.
I am from chores, fixing things
and caring for each other.
I am from a Catholic church,
where everyone is loved.
I am from the crafts, smiles, from
art,
to summer rec.
I am from cousins, aunts and uncles
who always keep in touch.
I am from a family of 6,
who love each other very much.
I am from celebrating with laughter.
I am from the sad funerals
to the happy days of birth.
I am from swimming, learning, reading,
to sports and puzzles.

Today I talked with my students about
their family stories. We discussed the format of how to write a paper. My students told me they were both familar
with the four square method. Basically after our discussion we all brainstormed some ideas and wrote them in our four
square diagram.

Today I let my students begin writing
their stories. They had a little trouble getting started with an introduction. I gave them some ideas of ways
they could go and off they went. As I mentioned previously once you get these girls started they have no trouble writing.
All the ideas come rushing our like water from a faucet.

Today we had our writers conference.
The girls were polite and said nice things about each others work. I felt each student did a good job. They had
minimal things to change so we began our illustrations. My students were very excited to learn they get to do an illustration.

Today my students continued to work
on their illustrations. Frances came to visit us. She asked each of the girls questions about their stories and
took a peek at their illustrations. Frances left and the girls continued coloring. I think we have finished our
stories. I can't wait for Thanksgiving! Yummy!
