Students will bring in a song lyric of their choice along with an I am poem.

March 2, 2009

Students will bring in a book of poetry of their choice.  They will also bring their journal to class and share a poem they have writtten.  They may also choose a poem they like from their poetry books.  Students will be introduced to Acrostic Poetry.  They will write their own Acrostic Poem in their journals.  http://www.teachervision.fen.com/poetry/printable/39741.html

March 9, 2009

The UNM students will demonstrate a poetry circle in front of the whole class.  We will then break into our separate groups and do a poetry circle within our separate groups.  The topic will be the choice of our students.  The poetry circle was provided by Frances in a handout.

March 16, 2009

Students will read several friend poems of different styles written by teens.  We will then have a discussion about the different styles.  Students will write their own friend poem in their journals. http://www.netpoets.com/poems/friends/index.htm

March 23, 2009

Students will continue discussion on friend poems.  Students will break into two groups and write two sentences about friends.  Within the two groups students will work together to make a friend poem from all of their sentences.  This idea was taken from a TESOL workshop I went to. 

March 30, 2009

Students will be introduced to Concrete Poetry a.k.a Shape Poetry.  Students will them write their own concrete poems in their journals.  They will be encouraged to share their poems.  If time is allotted students will also be introduced to Diamonte Poetry.  As a group students will form a diamonte poem.  http://www.literacyrules.com/concrete_poems.htm  http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/diamante/

April 13, 2009

Students will choose a topic of interest in which to prepare a poem for poetry night.  Students will brainstorm ideas and begin working on their poem.

Student will continue to polish their poems for poetry night as per their teacher Mrs. Hanon

April 27, 2009

This will be the last class.  As a reward for their cooperation Roderick, Sarah, and I have planned a rootbeer float party.  We will discuss any unfinished poetry that needs to be completed.
